Favicon: How To

favicons

Open up your browser to your website or blog, look to the left of the url. There’s a little picture to the left of your website url, and my friends that is favicon. It’s a small detail that can be overlooked, yet so easy to create. One of the most great feelings, great satisfactions, but someone will be saying “what you talking about man” is when you get yourself favicon.

For me, favicon is something like little icon, some small passport (little icon) of your website.

How to upload favicon to your website account? I will tell you how to upload (to add) and how to make it one.

A Favicon means your favorite icon, also known as a shortcut icon, Web site icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon. This is a file which containing one or more small icons, most commonly 16×16 pixels, associated with a particular Web site or Web page. A web administrator can create such an icon and install it into a Web site (or Web page) by several means, and graphical web browsers will then make use of it. Browsers that provide favicon support typically display a page’s favicon in the browser’s address bar and next to the page’s name in a list of bookmarks. Browsers that support a tabbed document interface typically show a page’s favicon next to the page’s title on the tab, and site-specific browsers use the favicon as desktop icon

Find favicon or make one

You can find some very nice favicons icon all over the website. Try to search different themes on Google. You can find some good free favicon (icon) galleries over the web. One of them is:

Convert one. You can make favicon, from any picture you can find on your hard disk, and want to be the one which will be generated. “Simply select a picture, logo or other graphic (of any size/resolution) for the “Source Image” and click “Generate FavIcon.ico”". I mostly use this one solution.

Make one by yourself from some online design website:

Make favicon with your skills and your own software, and than use Irfanview or another similiar program to open your .jpg file and then save it as an .ico file:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Fireworks
  • Paint
  • Corel PaintShop
  • GIMP

After you choose, one of this selection programs, you will get one file, and the name is: favicon.ico (16 px)

Upload favicon to your website

  • The first and most common way is to replace. Upload favicon.ico to your server by FTP client (File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another host over a TCP-based network, such as the Internet). I use free one, it’s called: Filezilla. I think this is the best solution. Go to root and then to public_html (or in some folder where is your website, if you place some add-on domain in this web hosting). This is the place, where you can find your favicon.ico. Just copy it and replace it. And the job is done. New favicon will show up, next time you reload your page.
Remember, if icon don’t show up, still, then just delete your cache, from your web browser
  • The second way . You will not find any favicon.ico in your public_html folder. If this is the case, just copy your own favicon.ico in public_html folder of your website.
  • In some wordpress themes, you have options to manual upload your favicon, in admin back panel in theme options. This is the third way and most easy way.
  • And the last way, most hard one. You will now need to edit your header.php of your wordpress blog. Depending on the theme you use, locate the header.php folder and edit the file by adding the following code favicon html Link Code.  Save your header.php file

Favicon is a little icon that people can make for their Web sites.
